The story of Fifine

“The Story of Fifine” is a short story written by Bernard Capes. It was published in 1899 as part of the collection titled “At a Winter’s Fire and Other Stories.” The story is a classic example of supernatural fiction and revolves around themes of love, jealousy, and the supernatural.

The story is set in a coastal village in France and follows the protagonist, Charles Lester, an artist who becomes enamored with a beautiful young woman named Fifine. Fifine is in a troubled marriage with a man named Michel, who is known to have a violent and jealous nature. Despite the dangers, Fifine and Charles begin a passionate and secretive affair.

As their relationship deepens, strange and unsettling events start occurring. Fifine’s husband, Michel, becomes increasingly suspicious of her actions and Charles’ presence. The village is also filled with rumors and superstitions about the supernatural, and it is suggested that Fifine might have made a pact with a malevolent entity known as “The Scourge.”

As the story unfolds, the atmosphere becomes more ominous. Charles becomes consumed by his love for Fifine and his fear of Michel. He begins to suspect that there is indeed something supernatural at play. The tension escalates as Charles and Fifine’s relationship faces greater risks from Michel’s jealousy and the potential supernatural forces.

Without giving away too much, the story takes a dark turn as the truth about Fifine’s past and her connection to the mysterious “Scourge” is revealed. The story explores the themes of forbidden love, the power of jealousy, and the blurred lines between reality and the supernatural.

Overall, “The Story of Fifine” by Bernard Capes is a chilling tale that delves into the complexities of human emotions, the unknown, and the eerie realm of the supernatural.
