JULAKAN: Words That Bind Souls

Some words don’t translate. They carry worlds.

In the Manding tradition, griots are more than storytellers—they are living libraries whose words don’t merely describe reality but breathe it into being. A name spoken with care and precision brings a person fully into existence. Spoken carelessly or wrong, it can shatter a lineage across generations.

Jeliba Kouyateh of Kirina, seventh-generation griot, carries his grandfather’s kora and the weight of an ancient legacy. When a prophecy reveals seven villages hiding seven silences—lost words threatening to erase everything the ancestors built—Jeliba embarks on a journey that will test everything he knows about tradition, memory, and truth.

From villages where knowledge has grown thin to museums where manuscripts gather dust unread, from sacred forests losing their names to his own home where the greatest silence waited all along, Jeliba discovers something profound: cultural preservation is not about perfect transmission. It’s about honest witnessing, the courage to correct past errors, and finding the one who truly listens.

Structured like a kora song—in spiraling movements that deepen with each return—Julakan stands in conversation with the masterworks of contemporary African literature, drawing on the transformative power of storytelling. For readers who appreciated the grand narratives of Things Fall Apart and the introspective journeys of The Alchemist, Julakan offers a related, luminous meditation on the bonds that tie souls together, the power of words to heal or harm, and what it truly means to inherit something larger than yourself.

The spiral is always opening. The griot’s work is never finished.
