Detective Sergeant Alex Desocarras’s solve rate is legendary—or it was—until recently. After months of building a high profile, money-laundering case, the Crown refused to press charges, doubting his evidence would secure a conviction. Now, his latest case—with no leads and no suspect—has his gut tied in knots.

An 11-year-old Gits’ilaasü girl is kidnapped one night after soccer practice, and an anonymous tip leads investigators to an empty house in Vancouver—1,200 kilometers away.

An Anishinaabe filmmaker, who’s made it her personal mission to find the girl, survives an attack at a remote lake in the Cariboo—thanks only to off-duty Alex’s interference.

Alex discovers both incidents are connected, but that’s not all—he’s found a link to a third victim, missing for eight years—and a high-ranking RCMP officer. Enraged and determined to bring this powerful man down, yet unsure how far the rot spreads, Alex secretly goes undercover to expose him, knowing in his heart that if he fails, the children will be lost forever.
