In the melancholic chapters of The Book of Songs, “Gone Are the Days” is a narrative of exhausted promises and disheartened minds. It depicts the sense of loss brought by an era in decline, and through the gradual deterioration of the daily diet of the upper and middle strata, conveys the poet’s lament over vanished prosperity, his irony toward a ruler who has broken faith, and his profound unease about a world sliding into decay. Yet perhaps the power to overcome hardship and bring about a turning point lies hidden within each person’s inner depths, waiting to be recognized and kindled.
